LAMPsig MySQL Class :: Optional Lab

The optional lab for the upcoming MySQL class is scheduled for this Monday, April 25th at 7:00pm at CalTek. Address, directions, and parking information can be found here.

Due to space limitations the class is now full so no more students are currently being accepted.

This optional pre-class is designed to help bootstrap those new to databases, MySQL, or a Linux LiveCD environment. Also, if you are planning on using an alternative MySQL server this would be the place to confirm access and trouble shoot any connection or version problems.

The lab goals are continued in further reading section.

MySQL CLASS OPTIONAL LAB GOALS

KNOPPIX LIVECD: To feel comfortable enough with Knoppix Linux LiveCD so that
work in the LAMPsig MySQL class can be accomplished.
1. Basic
  1. How to boot from CD
  2. How to access installed MySQL manual
  3. How to access the mysql client
  4. How to restart the mysql server if it dies
  5. For non-Linux users some basics in getting around the file system
  6. Intro to some text editors
  7. Reasons and work arounds for non-persistent data
2. Optional
  1. How to start up misc applications
  2. How to save to persistent media (Note: this is dependent on hardware configurations and will be different for each user. Because of this the ability to save persistent data is not guaranteed)
  3. How to connect to the internet while using Knoppix CD (Note: this is
    dependent on hardware configurations and will be different for each user. Because of this the ability to connect to the internet not guaranteed)
NON-KNOPPIX CONFIGURATIONS: For those choosing to access other MySQL server options.
1. Confirm access to MySQL server
2. Confirm MySQL version
3. Confirm ability to install sample 'world' database
Sample World Database
1. Knoppix: How to use installed sample 'world' database
2. Other: How to import world.sql into existing database (Note: import methods are dependent on specific MySQL server access. Help will be provided, but cannot be guaranteed)

Well, for those who survived the MySQL lab tonight ... Congrats :)

The main goal of the lab was to be able to work in an environment which gave you access to a mysql server and client. It doesn't matter whether that environment was provided by Knoppix Linux LiveCD, or some other MySQL server to which you have access. The main thing was to be able to connect to the MySQL server. If you weren't planning on using the environment provided by the Knoppix Linux Live CD, a secondary goal was the installation of the sample world database in the environment in which you will be working.

If you either didn't attend the lab tonight, or have not yet established your MySQL working environment, please try and do so prior to the first class meeting on May 2 as this material will not be covered again during the regular class meeting. If you need help, please post to the lamp-user list.

If the crowd attending tonight's lab was any indication, the class is going to be crowded. If you have not rsvped and reserved a spot it is unlikely that there will be room. A closely related request is that if you attended tonight's lab and decided that this is not the class for you, then please email me at sharon_AT_linuxchixla_(DOT)_org and let me know so I can add students on the waiting list.

Remember, even if you are using the Knoppix Linux LiveCD, an extensive knowledge of Linux is not required. All that is required for this class is to be able to get to the MySQL command line client :) But a general sense of how to get around in the file system would be helpful.
